Suspension Systems

Complete technical guide to suspension technology and ooxAuto solutions

What is a Suspension System?

A suspension system is the collection of elastic and structural components that connect the vehicle body (chassis) to the wheels (axles). While designed as elastic structures, suspensions have sufficient rigidity to ensure both driving comfort and vehicle stability.

Transmit Forces

Transfers all forces and moments between wheels and chassis

Absorb Impacts

Dampens and suppresses road surface impacts and vibrations

Ensure Handling

Maintains vehicle maneuverability and directional stability

Suspension Types

Non-Independent Suspension

Left and right wheels are connected by a single solid axle assembly, moving together as one unit.

  • Lower cost to manufacture
  • Simpler design and maintenance
  • Greater body roll during cornering
  • Reduced ground contact on uneven roads

Independent Suspension

Each wheel operates independently through its own suspension assembly, providing individualized control.

  • Superior ride comfort and handling
  • Reduced body roll and vibration
  • Better ground contact on uneven surfaces
  • Improved vehicle stability

Suspension Components

All suspension systems consist of three primary elements:

Elastic Elements

Creates flexible connection between chassis and wheels, absorbing and dampening impacts and vibrations.

Examples:

  • • Coil springs
  • • Leaf springs
  • • Air springs
  • • Torsion bars

Damping Elements

Suppresses and reduces vibrations from elastic elements, dissipating energy and improving comfort.

Components:

  • • Shock absorbers
  • • Damper units
  • • Hydraulic cylinders
  • • Control valves

Guidance System

Constrains wheel movement along defined trajectories while transmitting forces in all directions.

Components:

  • • Control arms
  • • Steering linkage
  • • Sway bars
  • • Bushings
